A Panerai Limited Edition: Introducing the 42mm Panerai Submersible Azzurro

The Panerai Submersible made its debut back in 1998. Up until then, the Luminor and the Radiomir were known for their unique case design, uncluttered dials, and wrist presence. With the release of the PAM 024, Panerai created it’s first piece that met all the criteria of a professional diving watch and further established it's historical ties to the sea. Today, it is an icon among Panerai watches as it is the first dive spec Panerai that features a 44mm Luminor case, Egiziano style diving bezel, and a water resistance up to 300m.

In the last 22 years, Panerai has released dozens of Submersible models and its popularity has increased exponentially. You can see some of the most recent Submersible models here. In 2019, Panerai designated the Submersible as its own collection. Up until then, all Submersible models were placed under the Luminor collection.

In 2017, Panerai released an online exclusive limited edition with the PAM 731. Limited to 100 pieces, the watch quickly sold out proving that the Submersible was still in high demand among Paneristi two decades later. In an attempt to recreate its previous success, Panerai recently released another e-boutique exclusive with the 42mm “Azzurro” limited edition PAM 1209. Azzurro means light blue in Italian and refers to the matte blue ceramic Egiziano style bezel.

Measuring 42mm, the watch is made of AISI 316L stainless steel, complete with a brushed finish. It features a Luminor style cushion case with the signature Panerai crown guard. Being a diving instrument, the watch has a unidirectional ceramic diving bezel and a depth rating of 300m. The black dial is highly legible as it contrasts nicely with the white hour markers and the silver hands. The “Azzurro” theme continues as the dial text for “Submersible” and “300m/1000ft” are highlighted in a light blue. The watch comes standard with a black rubber strap and an additional Sportech velcro strap. The rubber strap provides contrast and works well with the color theme of the bezel and text, making the blue pop.

The PAM 1209 is powered by one of Panerai’s newest movements, the calibre P.900. The P.900 is an automatic movement that features a 3 day power reserve, hour, minute, seconds, and a date function. Measuring at 4.2mm, the P.900 is relatively thin and found in Panerai models ranging from 38-42mm where case thickness is taken into consideration.

Priced at $9,800, the PAM 1209 is limited to 500pcs and available exclusively at www.panerai.com
