Gaming has always been popular, but its popularity is definitely increasing significantly during the global pandemic. With more people staying home, and many people furloughed from working, gaming is a great way to pass the time. This, plus the recent stock phenomenon known by Elon Musk as "GameStonk" makes gaming even more interesting right now. Gamers also have an appreciation for watches, and there surprisingly a lot of really nice video game inspired watches out there.
Fallout is a game released in 1997 and available now on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Windows and Mac OS so it is very familiar with many different kinds of gamers. The game is set during the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd centuries and features post-apocalyptic action role play. In 2018 the German watch brand Laco released a collectible limited edition called the RAD-AUX. A patina’d pilot watch designed for the Fallout gaming universe. The watch was a limited edition of 143 pieces, each watch was individually hand-aged and tucked inside an aged metal container along with some additional artifacts from the game.
The watch was developed by Matt Smith-Johnson of Laco and Ariel Adams, who you might know as the founder of A Blog to Watch. Their goal in creating this stellar Pilot’s watch was that people who are fans of the Fallout game series will recognize that folks who like watches also share that appreciation for small details and story telling. Now while the watch is sold out, they do pop up every so often on watch forums and eBay so keep your eyes peeled.
We think our vintage tan brown Everest Watch Roll would be the perfect companion for a patina’d Pilot’s watch like the Laco above. Click here to check them out now!
If you were born in the 80’s, you probably remember playing Capcom’s Street Fighter as a kid, more than likely in an arcade somewhere. It was addicting and frustrating all at the same time. The player (you) would compete in a one-on-one match against either the game itself or a friend and the key to winning was hitting that golden combo of buttons that initiated the right kick, punch, and jump to beat your opponent. The once arcade game is now available on many of the top gaming consoles.
Last year in 2020, Seiko decided we all needed a bit of fun in our lives and introduced their Seiko 5 Street Fighter V Limited Edition. There were six models inspired by the game's main characters from the whole series. With some bearing bright colors synonymous with their character in the game, some are beat up and patina’d to show they’ve been in a fight or two already. A few models are already sold out but at the time of writing this article, the majority are still in stock and for less than $500, this is a sure winner for that gamer in your life.
Check out our Everest Band NATO Straps that would be the perfect companion to your Seiko 5, here.
Another 80’s classic arcade game is next on our list and that is the always popular Pac-man. Now while Pac-Man may have been super popular in the 80’s, there’s no young gamer alive today that doesn’t know this game. Pac-man involved going through a maze-like field to eat all the dots all while avoiding the four other ghosts that were also running around the maze. Quite addicting if you’ve ever played.
The collaboration between PAC-MAN and Timex was initiated to celebrate 40 years of digital timekeeping with Timex and 40 years of the arcade game PAC-MAN. The watch is a smaller 34mm but that square case has it wearing a bit larger than most 34mm watches. The digital display completely encapsulates the essence of that arcade feel we were all used to playing as a kid. The watch comes in an all black, all gold, or all stainless steel models. This is such a fun watch that game lovers old and young will both appreciate. And for only $79 USD, it’s tough to beat as a great gift!!
Pair the Timex x PAC-MAN digital watch with one of our Everest Suede Watch Travel Pouches for the perfect gift combo!
