When we decided to start a Celebrity Spotlight on the Everest Journal, there was no question about who to start with - everyone’s favorite watch junkie, John Mayer.
From his appearance on the very first Talking Watches episode to now, his collection has only continued to grow (and make all of us jealous). Since we’re all stuck in the Great Indoors for a while, we’ve got plenty of time, but for now, we’re going to highlight just a few pieces John owns today - don’t worry, we’ll explore the rest of his collection down the road!
We’d be remiss if we didn’t start off with John Mayer’s famed 116508. The Yellow Gold Daytona with Green Dial has become so synonymous with the singer that it’s been nicknamed after him, and honestly, we get it. This stunner of a watch was released the same year as the Ceramic Daytona models and flew under the radar for quite some time...that is, until John talked about it and how underappreciated he thinks it is in Talking Watches Part 2 last year. After the video was released, the watch blew up overnight. With a gorgeous green sunburst dial, this Daytona just isn’t like all the rest - John knew that already, and now the whole world sees it in a New Light.
The second watch we’ll look at today - and one that has Half of My Heart for sure, is his Audemars Piguet Concept Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph. This watch was the first Royal Oak Concept self-winding model created, and man does it pack a punch! With the peripheral oscillating weight in platinum and a hand finished movement, the skeleton dial on this makes the watch a sight to see to start. Add the gorgeous titanium case, rehaut bezel with blue numbers, and a matching blue rubber strap, and WOW this watch is a killer.
Last but not least is Mayer’s custom Patek Phillipe 5004G. He had this watch commissioned a few years back, and if you haven’t seen it before, you need to. The gorgeous piece has a salmon dial and specially requested luminous hands so that he can see the time while he’s on stage. In his interview with Hodinkee, John said “This is the watch, above all others, that makes me want to live a little differently with it on. This watch has better taste than I do sometimes.” Honestly, dude...I get it. If anything happened to it, this isn’t the kind of watch you’d be Moving On and Getting Over anytime soon.
So, there’s that. Three of John Mayer’s most interesting watches in his ever expanding collection. Once we pick up our jaws and stop drooling long enough to look at more of his collection, we promise to delve deeper! Are there any celebrities with watch collections that you’d like to see featured in a future blog? Let us know in the comments.
