5 Watch Memes to Make You Laugh

Let’s be honest, watch collecting can sometimes be a bit of a serious and stuffy hobby. As someone who thoroughly enjoys having a good laugh and who also originally tried investment banking as a career, I can assure you that even people who have a very good sense of humor do not like laughing when it comes to their money. 

Therefore, when a single luxury watch can cost tens of thousands of dollars (or more), it’s easy to see how the fun and humor can sometimes get a bit lost among all of the in-house movements, hand-finishing, and sky-high resale values. However, amid all of the hashtags and wrist-shots (along with the general echo-chamber that is the news cycle of new releases on Instagram) resides a fun and irreverent corner of the watch enthusiast landscape that consists solely of watch memes. To be fair, a hilarious new watch meme is posted every minute, but here are 5 great ones to keep you laughing.

Colorful Dials - @brodinkee

@brodinkee is often regarded as one of the godfathers of the watch meme game, and his feed is packed full of side-splitters that frequently resonate with first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike. I love a good “pop of color” but not every watch needs to be given a technicolor assortment of dials. To be fair, it was cool when Doxa first did it and everyone absolutely went nuts when Rolex launched the updated Oyster perpetual range with bright dial colors. However, when everything from an Omega Aqua Terra to a Sinn 556 is being offered with a whole rainbow assortment of colorful dials, maybe that is a sign this whole colorful dial trend has reached a point of maximum saturation, and it is now just becoming a gimmick for brands who want to change things up without actually having to produce an entirely new watch. 

Rolex Yacht-Master - @yourauthorizeddealer

While this meme from @yourauthorizeddealer might slightly annoy a few Rolex Yacht-Master owners out there who actually do own boats and spend time out on the water, it’s still a fun jab at the Yacht-Master name itself. Admittedly, most people who own Submariners don’t actually use them for diving, and no one is using their Daytona to record lap times at the race track (or even going to the race track for that matter). However, when a watch is called the “Yacht-Master” (aka one that is a master of yachts), it creates certain unrealistic expectations that don't quite exist with the other sports watch names in Rolex’s catalog… although on second thought, the Sea-Dweller may actually have the Yacht-Master beat in this particular category. 

Rolex Availability - @watch.memes 

While making fun of Rolex’s lack of retail availability could be considered low-hanging fruit, this particular meme from the Instagram account @watch.memes does it particularly well. You haven’t been able to walk into a Rolex boutique and purchase the exact watch you want for a number of years, but things have now reached a point where pretty much everything except a diamond-encrusted Lady-Datejust is completely unavailable without spending some amount of time on a waiting list. On top of that, due to the proliferation of “display only” Rolex watches, you could literally rob a boutique at gun-point and still not walk out of there with a working Rolex.

Swatch X Omega MoonSwatch - @watchumor

Another consistent producer of top-quality watch memes is @watchumor, who recently made this one that takes aim at people’s fascination with the Swatch X Omega MoonSwatch. Now, I’m just as guilty of this as anyone else, and I must admit that I’m still trying to get my hands on one, despite the fact that I own an actual Speedmaster Moonwatch. However, given the tumultuous political climate, the ongoing global pandemic, and the recent war between Russia and Ukraine, it is somewhat remarkable that a bunch of plastic (sorry, “Bioceramic”) watches managed to entirely capture the attention of so many individuals, including a significant number of people who are not normally watch enthusiasts.

Omega Watch Designs - @watchtaster

This meme from @watchtaster is straight-up savage, and I almost didn’t want to include it because it’s such a hard dig at Omega; however, it really does draw attention to something that I think is worth discussing. To be clear, I love Omega - I proudly own one of their watches, I know people who work at the company, and I truly believe that Omega’s catalog offers some of the best bang for your buck within the entire luxury watch industry. That being said, it absolutely baffles me why Omega chooses to produce watches that have so many visual similarities to existing Rolex models.

I’m not saying that Omega can’t ever make a green watch, but why did it have to be a stainless steel dive watch that received a green dial and bezel when the Rolex Submariner “Hulk” was already such a famous presence within the industry. Similarly, Omega chose to give a solid gold chronograph a green dial, when the gold Rolex Daytona with a green dial was already one of the brand’s most visually distinct and hype-drenched watches. That gold Speedmaster would look absolutely stunning with a bright red dial and matching bezel, and since red is Omega’s company color, a red Speedy would feel entirely appropriate for the brand while simultaneously not looking like anything that exists within Rolex’s current catalog.
